Mozart joined the fraternity as an Entered Apprentice at 28 years old, on December 14, 1784 in Lodge Zu Wohltatigkeit’ (Beneficence) in Vienna. He was raised a Master Mason and remained a Brother until his death in 1791. Both his father-in-law and brother-in-law were Freemasons.
Mozart wrote at least eight compositions for the Masons. These include his Masonic Funeral Music in C minor and the little Masonic Cantata.
The Magic Flute
His most famous piece, influenced by his Masonic ties, is the opera “The Magic Flute”. Thus it is the focus of this initial entry on the Music step of the winding staircase. If you are a Mason, you want to be aware of this not only for your own enjoyment, but as a matter of pride.
