The importance of Euclid.

Hic incipiunt constituciones artis gemetriae secundum Eucyldem
Here begin the constitutions of the art of Geometry according to Euclid.

This is the beginning line of the Regius Poem, or Halliwell Manuscript.  One of the earliest Masonic (some might say proto-Masonic) documents describing our ancient craft (1390-1425AD).  It then proceeds to trace Masonry back to the students of Euclid.

The influence of his pivotal work “The Elements” on the thinking of our ancient Brethren makes any discussion of Geometry incomplete without starting with a discussion of who he was and the importance of what he wrote.

It is the subject of a blog post found elsewhere on this website at.Why is Euclid important?

This short video is an introduction to the Khan Academy course on Geometry.  It starts with a great quote from Euclid that became a defining principal of the Enlightenment and an influence on our ancient Masonic Brethren.
“The laws of nature are but the mathematical thoughts of God.”

It also quotes Lincoln’s use of the Elements as a tool in improving his reasoning power.
