An image showing and labelling the parts of the eye

Seeing is deemed the noblest

Of all the faculties of human nature, seeing is deemed the noblest in Freemasonry.  Masons are taught to admire the remarkable structure of the eye.  However,  you need to understand more than simply how the light enters the eye and is transmitted by the optic nerve.

Perceiving is more than just seeing

Our Masonic lectures ask you to contemplate all the varied and beautiful uses to which you put this  faculty.   Do this, and the whole issue of how you process those images and how you perceive the world as a result, becomes an important and fascinating study.

This discussion with Dr. Purvis on the Psychology  of Visual Perception will take you beyond the mechanical explanation to a deeper understanding of how we perceive the “light” that we see and why seeing is deemed the noblest faculty.
