Its not just any Eggnog, its Brother George Washington’s Eggnog!

Few things are more identified with Christmas and New Year’s festivities than eggnog.  You can find Brother George Washington’s eggnog recipe on Food.com.  It calls for brandy, whiskey, Jamaican rum and sherry wine.  It was clearly for Brothers who were either staying over for the night, or had horses that could find their way home with little or no input from the rider.  It is not for individuals driving home in cars.

You refrigerate it for five days before serving.  So hop on it if you want to serve George Washington’s eggnog during the holidays.

The Long, Rich, Boozy History of Eggnog

This is the title to an interesting short article you will enjoy on Smithsonian, com which traces eggnog back to a medieval drinks called “possets” and “syllabubs”.

The eggnog riot

It also makes mention of George Washington’s eggnog recipe and a little known “Eggnog Riot” at West Point.  It was triggered by a prohibition on adding alcohol to the eggnog at the Academy.

How do you make a good historic eggnog?

The featured video shows how to prepare your own old fashioned eggnog.  It may not be George Washington’s recipe, but you will find it an improvement over commercial eggnog.

Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year  and don’t forget St. John the Evangelist’s feast day on the 27th.  Stay safe and remember, even eggnog should be imbibed only in moderation.
